Hong Kong City Getaway : Jockey Club Mt.Davis Youth Hostel

If you're a fan of nature, and wanna getaway from the hustle bustle of Hong Kong city centre, you may wanna give Jockey Club Mt.Davis Youth Hostel a try.

Surrounded by trees and located near the open ocean, the scenery here is very beautiful, and peaceful especially at night. This place would serve as a meaningful getaway bonding session with friends or family.

* * *

As it lives up to its name, Jockey Club Mt.Davis Youth Hostel is situated on Hong Kong Island, at the top of the hill facing towards the ocean view. Occasionally, you may hear airplanes flying over as the Hong Kong International Airport is just opposite another island.

Transportation
However, getting up there from the city centre may be a challenge as there is very little transport service catered to this area. The estimated traveling time from Hong Kong island (Admiralty Station) and Hong Kong mainland (Mongkok Station) is around 15-20 minutes, and 30-40 minutes respectively depending on the traffic condition in Hong Kong. If you're lucky, you may hail a taxi at the city centre or get an Uber driver to take you up there with an estimated fee of HKD$50-80. But, take note that the chances of getting a driver gets slimmer especially in the evening because the place can be quite dark and scary to drive up at night. Or, you may utilize their FREE shuttle bus with the below pick-up and drop-off schedule.

Once exiting at Kennedy Town MTR Exit C, immediately turn right and walk until you see this bus stand with the sign "Jockey Club Mt.Davis Youth Hostel" (just like the picture below). It should be right opposite a "Cafe Siem" restaurant at a row of shops. Wait at the bus stand, and make sure to wave the bus to stop when it comes at the allocated time.

Luckily enough, it was in the morning 11am, and me and my friends (a group of 4) manage to get an Uber to send us directly to the hostel itself with a estimated fee of HKD$70++. The road up there is steep and narrow, and only able to fit 1 car during the journey. In the evening around 10.45pm, we took the shuttle bus back to the hotel, and it was pretty dark and scary.

Room, Toilet, and Facilities
Me and my friends stayed at their Family Quadruple 4-beds room for an estimate of HKD$160/per night (equivalent to RM352/per night; RM88/per pax/per night). If you're not a member of YHA, you're required to pay an additional of HKD$150 (only one person has to sign up on behalf of the group).

The room was pretty spacious, furnished with a double-decker bed, and a king size bed (like the pictures below). However, our room is located away from the seaside view. I believe the seaside view is only available for certain types of room, so make sure to check with the hotel when you book. There was a room heater and air-conditioner as well, but the toilet is separated from the room and is shared with other hotel travelers. Thus, to use the toilet, it may be pretty scary as you need to walk out in the middle of the night.

The toilet was pretty okay, but in my personal perspective, it looks like those Hong Kong prison police dormitory shared bathroom. Maybe it's because of the windows and the tiled wall/floor design that makes it scary especially at night. Plus, behind the bathroom is already a forest, of course sure scary la. That's why I avoided using the toilet in the middle of the night. Aside from that, the water heater is not working very well, and you're more likely to bath in cold water. And when I meant cold, it's very very cold because we're staying up at a mountain after all. However, you may use another toilet which belongs to another block, it should be better than the one that we had used during our trip.

Other than that, they have a basic kitchen which you may used freely to cook whatever you want, but make sure to wash up and place the materials back once you're done. They have a spacious study area for you to do your work, and a private media room for you to watch TV or movies. You may also have an BBQ party over the open campfire area, which makes it a very good environment for a bond fire session with friends and family, but make sure to inform the staff before using. Extra charges may apply if you requests additional equipment and food from the hostel.

Overall, I had a pleasant stay at this hotel and wouldn't mind going back again. But, the next time I come back to this place, I would rather chose to stay in a double-bed bedroom with an attached bathroom.
